On immigrating when you don't speak the language

There is thousands if not hundreds of thousands people in UK that have 0 to no English. They work, live, etc. If for whatever reason they need English they rely on friends or government for translation·

That others do it doesn't make it a good idea.

People flee their homelands for a bunch of reasons: war, famine, violence, political prosecution, seeking for better opportunities for themselves and their children. I easily see how one or two of these reasons could apply in this hypothetical case. In any of those cases, people move to wherever they can, being fluent in the language or not.

Sounds like you and your family have been very lucky and you might be slightly insensitive. I hope the latter is not the case. ;-)
